What is irritable bowel syndrome?
Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a common disfunction of the gut. Basically this means you bowels are having problems, although your gut does not only include your bowels.
A disfunction of the gut is where one of the components of your digestive system is not working correctly, whilst showing no abnormality in the make up of the gut.
What does IBS do to my gut?
What this means is that your gut can look normal, but can give you problems. In effect it's not working properly.
How Many People get IBS?
What IBS does cause in pain in your gut or abdominal area. In the UK the problem is experienced by up to one in 5 people
Who gets IBS?
Men are more prone to IBS than women, whilst young adults and teens are more likely to get it than older people. Although it could happen at any point in your life.
What are the symptoms of IBS?
IBS causes abdominal pain and other symptoms (listed below). Up to 1 in 5 people in the UK develop IBS at some stage in their life. IBS can affect anyone at any age, but it commonly first develops in young adults and teenagers. Women are affected more often than men. |
